Paint in numbers

Thirty artists. Thirty works. Thirty days.

The second annual 30-30-30 event, hosted by the Third Street Gallery in Moscow, commissions 30 local artists to create 30 pieces in 30 days.

The gallery will display the resulting 900 works for a limited time Dec. 5 and Dec. 6. Each will be sold for $30.

Arts Assistant DJ Scallorn said organizers learned a lot last year and are expecting a bigger turnout this year as people become more aware of the event.

Artist Aaron Johnson participated in the event last year and sold all 30 of his works.

“Obviously you always hope to at least sell something…but I was surprised when all of my work was sold,” Johnson said.

He said the turnout for last year’s sale blew him away.

“When we were there last year, it was like a Black Friday art sale,” he said. “People were just pulling stuff off the walls.”

Dana Aldis suggested the 30-30-30 event to the City of Moscow last year and will participate again this year. Aldis said the application process for artists was better this year, drawing in a range of mediums and established artists.

“We have quite a wide range of anywhere from traditional oil, acrylic and watercolor artists to some really interesting conceptual art, and the cool thing is it’s all done on the same format so it’s interesting to see how these artists push themselves,” she said.

Most of the artists attend the gallery sale to hang out and talk with clients, Aldis said.

Many of the participating artists earn more for their work outside of the 30-30-30. Johnson said it’s a good opportunity to purchase work that would normally be much more expensive.

“We really want you to take a piece of this work home with you and enjoy it because it really is a steal,” Aldis said.

She said it’s important that people understand the work will be taken down as it is purchased during the sale.

“The show doesn’t stay up for long at all,” she said. “People take the work home with them, so if you want to see the work in the entirety, go to the preview,” she said.

The Sneak Peek will be held Dec. 5 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Dec. 6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Third Street Gallery in Moscow.

The one-day sale will take place from 4:05 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 6 with live music by the Palouse Jazz Project.
