Women’s soccer to take on No. 22 Utah

The women’s soccer team is going back on the road this week to continue conference play against the No. 22 University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

It will be a single game week for both teams, giving them a break from competition for the weekend.

WSU is now (1-4-0) in the Pac-12 after recording their first conference win against Arizona State on Sunday. A late goal made by freshman forward Katie Jones evened out the score and sent the two teams into overtime, and then double overtime when freshman forward Morgan Weaver made the winning shot for the Cougars.

The Cougars outshot the Sun Devils 30-6, and now lead the Pac-12 in overall shots.

“Last year, we were probably at the bottom of the conference, about every goal went in,” Head Coach Todd Shulenberger said, “Relate that to [Mike] Leach’s football team and the amount of offense they strive on. If they were number one in the Pac in passing yards and had nothing to show for it, that’d be pretty hard to swallow, and that’s with us. Our offense is right there with nothing to show for it.”

The Utes have had a dominant season thus far, going (9-2-2) overall and (4-0-1) in the conference. Utah took down both Oregon and Oregon State at home last week, edging them both out with 1-0 finals. Washington and Arizona are also on the list of Pac-12 teams who have fallen to the Utes so far this season.

Utah sophomore forward and defender Hailey Skolmoski is 13th in the nation for goals, tallying 10 for the season. Weaver is the lead scorer for WSU, who follows close behind Skolmoski with eight goals.

WSU has won back-to-back games against Utah, beating them 1-0 in 2015 and 4-2 in 2014. The Utes last beat the Cougars in Pullman in 2013 with a 4-2 double overtime victory.

“We’re going to go in there prepared. We want another win and getting our first one over ASU,” junior defender Kelsee Crenshaw said, “We are ready more than ever and we just want to keep on winning,”

Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. PST today on Ute Field in Salt Lake City. The game can be watched on Pac-12 Plus, a new platform that streams live events via twitter. It can also be watched on the Pac-12 Network.
