Double overtime results in a tie for the Cougs

The WSU soccer team closed out a fierce Sunday afternoon game with a 1-1 draw in double overtime against the University of Oregon.

Senior forward Amy Neal memorialized the game with her first-ever goal at Washington State after sending in a ball that had rebounded off a shot by fellow senior forward Kaitlyn Johnson.

“It was unbelievable. It was a team effort out there, it wasn’t my shot; I followed someone else’s so I can’t take all of the credit, but it was amazing,” Neal said, “This is an unbelievable group. I couldn’t have changed anything about them.”

The two teams clashed on the Lower Soccer Field, drawing a total of 21 fouls and five yellow cards between the two of them. Four of the yellow cards were issued to Oregon players while the Cougars’ singular card was issued to their bench.

WSU controlled the majority of possession throughout the game but struggled to get the ball past Oregon junior goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir. The Cougars had multiple looks, outshooting Oregon 25-7.

The Ducks kicked off scoring in the 18th minute when sophomore midfielder Bayley Bruner connected with a ball that had been played near a post, flicking it into the goal close up. The Cougars did not respond until the second half when Neal got her goal in the 72nd minute.

The teams remained tied at the end of regulation, which sent the teams into overtime, but neither team was able to convert that time into a goal.

“This is just another game that we were in complete control of from a shots standpoint and a possession standpoint and just gave up a silly goal again,” Head Coach Todd Shulenberger said. “Am I happy to get a result in a tie? Yes. Am I still disappointed? Absolutely.”

The Cougars will close out their season against the University of Washington on Thursday in Pullman. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. on the Lower Soccer Field.
