Friends of KZUU and the Palace present Bassfest: Illumination Party

Friends of KZUU, The Palace and the social chairs of Greek Life have joined forces at Bassfest: Illumination Party. This Electronic Dance Music (EDM) night showcases four of WSU’s local DJs.

Opening this year’s Bassfest series will be the DJ Saffron City from 9 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.; Cats & Pajamas perform from 10 p.m. to 10:45 p.m.; Megvman performs from 11 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.; DJ OffWhite will close out the night from midnight to 12:45 a.m., according to the Bassfest: Illumination Facebook page.

Jordan Hurt, or Megvman, is a sophomore Management Information Systems (MIS) in Business Administration major, has been a DJ for KZUU for two years and hosts a show called The Megvshow with Magvman, according to KZUU 90.7fm.

“On my show I don’t use a playlist — I mix music live,” Hurt said.

Not only does Hurt work at KZUU 90.7fm, he DJs at Zzu Bar & Grill. One night, Hurt rapped Lil Wayne’s MegaMan and his friend, DJ DarkBlood dubbed him Megvman.

“I don’t expect everything to happen immediately, but the dream would be to be a DJ and music producer but I have my degree to fall back on,” Hurt said. “If not I’d like to own my own club.”

All of the performers are either students at WSU or work for WSU, said Mikayla Ketner, the festival director at KZUU and Friends of KZUU. This is the first time that Friends of KZUU wants to hold Bassfest every month. Bassfest: Illumination Party raises money for Kazzufest next year and Greek Life philanthropy.

“Just because the music is EDM, doesn’t mean that this is a rave,” Ketner said. “It’s an event or a show like a Haus Show but with a different type of music.”

Friends of KZUU want to create a welcoming environment for live music in Pullman, Ketner said. The audience will have a good time at a different type of event.

“I want the people to not only hear my music but feel what I’m feeling,” Hurt said. “If the DJ is having a good time the crowd can feel it and if he’s not the music is garbage. If he’s having a great time the crowd is feeling it too.”

The Bassfest: Illumination party will be held on Thursday, Aug. 25 at the Palace at 450 NE Oak St. The doors will open at 9 p.m. General admission will be $5 and $3 when wearing white or neon.
