Garage, house damaged in fire

From staff reports

A fire involving a house and garage on Country Club Road resulted in structural damage Thursday night, said Lester Erwin, Whitman County Fire District 12 Chief.

Erwin said the resident of the house reported the fire after hearing a crackling sound and seeing his garage was on fire.

He said the garage was completely on fire when firefighters arrived and at that point they took defensive action. He said they drowned the garage in water and were able to put out the fire by around 2 a.m.

The garage was completely destroyed in the fire and the house received a large amount of damage due to its close proximity to the garage, Erwin said. Window seals on the house were damaged and it will most likely need to be re-sided from damage caused by the fire.

Erwin said he believed there was $25,000-$30,000 or more in damage to the garage and house.

Two trucks from Fire District 14 and five trucks from Fire District 12 were on the scene and there were no injuries in the fire, Erwin said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the WSU fire marshal, Erwin said, but at this point it appears that an electrical issue was the cause.
