Cougar tennis remains undefeated on historic streak

From staff reports

The women’s tennis team has made its way into the record books.

After a strong month and a half of performances, the Cougars have not seemed to slow down at all, remaining undefeated.

The Cougars beat Utah State 6-0, with every Cougar winning in straight sets during singles competition and winning two doubles matches with the third doubles match tied at 5-5.

Sophomore Donika Bashota won her match against Utah State’s Ekaterina Tugarinova, 6-2, 6-1. This match capped off the second-best start in school history with a 28-2 record.

Freshman Aneta Miksovska also made it into the record books after she defeated Maggie O’Meara, 6-1, 6-1. Miksovska has played herself into the second-best start in school history for a freshman with an impressive 20 wins and three losses.

Senior Maria Biryukova was the third Cougar to insert herself into Cougar history after she beat Nini Guensler, 6-0, 6-4. In the second set Biryukova took an early lead, only to have to battle until the end in order to prevail over Guensler. The win meant she was tied for eighth all-time with Andrea Reisz.

Head Coach Lisa Hart has been at the program for 13 years and said she is happy with how the team is performing so far.

“I think says a lot about our program right now. We have some great accomplishments going on but I’m most proud of how our players are focused on the team goal. I think they are all happy about their individual success but I think they are all hungry for more team success.”

As for how the team looks to improve, Hart explained that the team needs to get better at working hard and stay focused on certain aspects of their game.

Bashota also said the team is focused on next week’s matches once it makes it through this weekend. The Cougars play two ranked opponents in Fresno State and Saint Mary’s, so there is some emphasis on how to prepare for those matches.

“We try to use these matches to get us prepared for future matches, which will be tougher,” Bashota said.

The Cougars will play Fresno State at 12 p.m. on Friday and Saint Mary’s at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
