The WSU swim team came out of Gibb Pool on Friday victorious after a 154-100 win over the Oregon State University Beavers. This was the return of Cougar swimming after almost a month-long break.

“When you take a month off of racing everyone is nervous and everyone is anxious,” said Head Coach Tom Jager, “I think they went out hard but they swam fast.”

Cheering fans watched as the Cougars claimed the win in 12 events, only giving up five to the Beavers.

WSU kicked off the meet with a 1:44.49 finish in the 200-medley relay event. The event was followed by the 1000 freestyle where OSU claimed the first of their wins. Beaver senior Samantha Harrison would be the one to touch the wall first, earning nine points for her team. WSU junior Kendra Griffin followed Harrison finishing .2 seconds later.

Harrison would later earn the second OSU victory in the 500 freestyle gaining another nine points for the Beavers.

Jager cheered on the side as several WSU swimmers claimed more than one win. Senior Presley Wetterstrom won both the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke. Another two were won by junior Addisynn Bursch, who dominated the 200 freestyle and later went on to do the same in the 100 freestyle.

Oregon State junior Andrea Young was the first to touch the wall for the last of Oregon State’s individual wins. She finished with a time of 2:11.17. She was followed by Beaver junior Czsarina Isleta who’s final time was 2:14.38

Jager credited several swimmers, including Wetterstrom and sophomore Anna Brolin, with strong leadership on the team.

The last race of the evening was the 400-yard freestyle relay. The OSU team which included Young and Harrison would be the first to finish.

The next time the Cougars will be competing in the pool will be against Nebraska at 5:00 p.m. Friday in Gibb Pool.
