Raising her arms above her head, junior forward Jocelyn Jeffers triumphantly signaled the end of a 1-0 victory over the Stanford Cardinal.

Coming into the match, Stanford was ranked No. 6 in the RPI rankings and had not lost a conference match on the road in 26 straight games.

However, that streak ended Sunday when Jeffers volleyed the game-winning goal in the 58th minute off assists from sophomore forward Kourtney Guetlein and junior midfielder Nicole Setterlund.

“That goal was the best feeling I’ve had here ever since my first goal as a freshman,” Jeffers said. “It’s an amazing feeling, not just for myself, but that I could score for the seniors.”

The Sunday match marked the annual Senior Day for the team, which is the last regular season home game for five of the players.

“You can’t say enough about the respect we have for those five women,” Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “To send them out in this fashion against a top ranked team is unbelievable.”

The Cougars came out strong in the second half with great ball movement offensively and gritty defensive play.

“Today had so many layers to it, and I thought our team competed in an unbelievable way,” McAlpine said. “It was an unbelievable effort in the second half, something that we need at this time in the year.”

There were few scoring chances for Stanford throughout the match, a testament to the solid play by the Washington State defense.

“It started with great discipline in our defending,” McAlpine said. “We continued to have people get behind the ball and that was where it began.”

WSU also recorded a victory over a top-25 team Friday, when the Cougars defeated No. 21 California 3-1.

Cal got on the board first in the eighth minute when senior midfielder Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick drilled a low corner kick into the box that junior forward Sandra Ley flicked in.

Washington State scored its first goal in the 34th minute when Setterlund tapped in a loose ball after senior forward Micaela Castain’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar.

The Cougars added another goal in the 53rd minute when Setterlund scored once again off a tip from Castain.

In the 85th minute, Washington State added its third goal of the match when Guetlein received a pass near the far post from Castain and tapped it in.

“Many of the things we worked on during our preparation this week showed up in the match,” McAlpine said. “We had a great response to their goal and showed great intensity in the second half.”

The two-goal game for Setterlund was her second in the past week, coming as a result of intensity and shear will out on the park.

“It didn’t matter that they scored first, we came back and scored, which shows we can come back after being down one goal,” Setterlund said.

The Cougars have beaten a ranked California team five straight times in Pullman, according to Washington State Athletics.

Castain recorded three assists in the game, which marked her 11th assist of the season. That assist put Castain in the WSU record books for the most assists in a single season.

The final regular WSU soccer match of the season will be Friday at 1 p.m. against rival Washington. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
