Women’s basketball tips off season against LCSU
November 6, 2015
After losing three key upperclassmen off its 2014-15 squad the Cougars will unveil their youth-filled lineup against Lewis-Clark State in an exhibition game Sunday.
Washington State women’s basketball return four seniors, including forward Mariah Cooks and guard Danielle Awe. Nine underclassmen control the bulk of Head Coach June Daugherty’s roster this season with potential at every position.
“We’ve had a really good offseason,” Daugherty said Tuesday during her press conference. “We know we were that close and knew we were a good team. I think for the first time I can say we are two and sometimes three people deep at every position, which is a great luxury as a coach to have.”
The Cougars introduce three freshmen to the 2015-16 roster: Alexys Swedlund, a guard from Rapid City, South Dakota; Maria Kostourkova, a center from Lisbon, Portugal and Borislava Hristova, a forward from Varna, Bulgaria.
Hristova and Kostourkova make the Cougars the most diverse roster in women’s college basketball, with players from seven different countries and five different states. That depth is expected to be tested in the exhibition game and potentially some more creativeness than a typical game that counts in the win-loss column.
With the three new faces and a difference sense of style around the program, redshirt freshman forward Nike McClure said the team has been focused on building up their chemistry both on and off the court.
“I feel like if you have great off the court chemistry it’s even better on the court,” McClure said. “What I’ve noticed is we are really unselfish with the basketball and we are all capable of scoring. I’m really excited where this team is going because we are putting in work.”
Fans will also experience a new format to the way the game is played. In June 2015, the NCAA announced several changes to women’s college basketball, including the implementation of four 10-minute quarters.
“I think the whole premise in women’s basketball nationally is to make it more exciting and make it more fan friendly and entertaining,” Daugherty said. “I think the four quarters are going to allow us to do some different things offensively and defensively.
For their exhibition against LCSU Sunday, with the new rules implemented and a precursor to their regular-season opener against UC Santa Barbara, it’s more than just a tune-up game in the eyes of forward Mariah Cooks.
“We’re going to go in with the same mentality we would a pre-season game, Pac-12 game or post-season game,” Cooks said. “I think especially defensive we will know if we know our stuff when we come out. Whatever they do we should be able to defend it.”
