Standing in the Spotlight

A DJ with a fondness for mixing tracks, a band built of collaborative artists, an independent artist with a knack for ballads, and a comedian not shy of vaginas and erectile dysfunction made up the final round of Coug Spotlight.

The winner of Wednesday’s round for the SEB hosted competition was vocalist Andrew Turner, a sophomore music education major who won over the audience with his voice and guitar skills.

Turner, who has performed in the past with a piano, had never before played guitar in public.

Upon taking first place and learning he would receive $100 and the opportunity to perform at Springfest, Turner responded humbly and stressed his appreciation for The Jets, who he narrowly beat in the live vote.

“I don’t even care about the money,” he said. “Getting my music out there…letting people see my heart and be encouraged is what excites me the most.”

Turner said connecting and collaborating with The Jets is next on his agenda.

The Jets, also participants in the competition, expressed both positivity and disappointment, promising to return to the series next semester.

“We keep on getting better and better. I know we’ll get it next time. You haven’t seen the last of The Jets, “said band member and junior aerospace engineering major Komisi Leutele.

Logan Webberman, special events coordinator for SEB, was satisfied with the event.

“We had a turnout that was equal to what we’ve had the rest of the semester,” he said. “The performances were great and ended on a good note.”

For those still seeking the chance to share their musical talent, SEB is hosting an Acoustic Battle of the Bands Dec. 9 in the CUB Auditorium.
