Two alleged rapes yield one arrest, one investigation

From staff reports

Two rapes reportedly took place over the weekend, one at a WSU fraternity chapter house and the other at a residence.

A 19-year-old female was allegedly raped at the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity’s chapter house on Colorado Street on Oct. 29 during a social event.

The woman told Pullman Police officers she was dancing with the suspect when she had to use the bathroom. When she went to use the bathroom, the suspect allegedly followed to show her where it was located.

The man then brought the woman in a bedroom where he allegedly raped her, after she had repeatedly told the man no. The alleged rape ended when another person walked into the bedroom and the woman escaped.

After leaving the chapter house, the woman called the police as she walked home.

Pullman Police Sergeant Jake Opgenorth said a suspect has been identified. That suspect is not a member of Pi Kappa Phi.

Opgenorth also said the report implies the fraternity was cooperative and helped identify the suspect.

The incident is still under investigation.

Another man accused of rape may face trial at the end of this week following an incident that occurred on Oct. 30.

Tyler Hansen, 19, was arrested after reportedly entering a residence and raping a 22-year-old woman Friday night. The residence belonged to the woman’s boyfriend.

Opgenorth said Hansen had intercourse with the female, who was unaware Hansen was not her boyfriend as the lights were off, until her boyfriend showed up and turned the lights on.

The boyfriend fought Hansen, who then fled from the apartment, leaving behind his clothes, cellphone and wallet. Hansen was caught shortly after the incident and taken into custody. He was booked on burglary and second degree rape.

The Whitman County Prosecutor’s office said Hansen was released from jail on pre-trial conditions. The prosecutor is investigating whether to pursue trial against Hansen and will have a decision by Thursday. If a trial occurs, Hansen will undergo a preliminary hearing Nov. 13.
