Leading tree fruit research

From staff reports

Washington State University appointed researcher Karen Lewis to lead WSU’s tree fruit extension team.

Lewis, an extension regional specialist of tree fruit at WSU’s Moses Lake extension, was appointed to lead the team after Des Layne was appointed director of the agricultural and food systems and integrated plant sciences programs on Sept. 1. The appointment was effective Oct. 1.

Lewis was considered a top choice as she is not only experienced in the field, but is respected by members of the fruit industry.

“She has been engaged with this industry for a large number of years,” said Pete Jacoby, a professor of crop and soil sciences at WSU. “She is not only aware of local issues in Washington state that affect our industry but also global issues.”

Her leadership skills are considered top notch. She is described as a take-charge person who speaks with authority and knowledge.

Lewis’s research is diverse and involves many facets of the agricultural industry. A highlight of her research is the development of hydraulic controlled platforms that allow workers to pick fruit more effectively and increase worker safety.

Injuries are a huge impact on workers during harvests, and worker security is always an issue. Providing safer measures that also make workers more effective are vital to keeping harvests on track.

“I think she’s a wonderful fit, and I think she’ll be just great,” said Jacoby.
