Moscow, ‘heart of the arts’
September 2, 2015
This Thursday, businesses around Moscow will host special events, art openings, talks and performances open to the public.
BookPeople of Moscow looks to feature either an artist or an author on the first Thursday of every month, said Carol Spurling, co-owner of BookPeople. This Thursday they will spotlight author David Neiwert and his book “Of Orcas and Men.” He will be present to greet customers at 6:30 p.m. and he will give a presentation and reading from his book at 7 p.m.
In addition to Neiwert’s book reading, the Third Street Gallery will exhibit wok by sculptor Ralph Crawford on the second and third floors of Moscow’s City Hall, said Kathleen Burns, City of Moscow Art Director.
Roger Rowley, Director at the Prichard Art Gallery, said typically businesses feature an artist or host a meeting for First Thursday. However, the gallery will be hosting a live performance of a play.
“We’ve been doing a number of collaborations with the (University of Idaho) theater department,” Rowley said.
Before this performance the gallery had hosted readings and performance series with the University of Idaho theatre department. The play, Vang, is about the experiences of recent immigrants and refugees farming in America. On Moscow First Thursday’s Facebook page, the performance is described as gut-wrenching.
The performance starts at 6 p.m. The play is produced by the Vandal Theatre Lab with support from the University of Idaho College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences’ Seed Grant Program.
This Thursday they will feature a new series of paintings by Laurel Macdonald titled “The Artist’s Garden.” People can pick up a “passport” at any of the participating businesses, get it stamped at any four of the community events and then turn it in to Nourish Yoga before 8 p.m. for a raffle drawing.
Mark McKinney, co-owner of Nourish Yoga, said Nourish Yoga has been open in Moscow for almost five years, and participate in First Thursdays whenever they can.
“We’re about to open, in the front of the studio, a juice bar and café, hopefully in October,” McKinney said.
Businesses participating in First Thursday also include Palouse Books, Moscow Food Co-op, and Essential Art Gallery and Fine Gifts. More information about the First Thursday can be found on their Facebook page, Moscow First Thursday.
