International students and athletes at WSU celebrated themselves and their culture at the WSU Women’s basketball game Thursday.
International students and their friends and family were given free tickets to the game, which was WSU Women’s Basketball Team versus University of the Pacific.
Students from the International Center prepared displays for an expo held at Beasley Coliseum before the game. Those coming to spectate could walk around the expo and ask students questions about their countries. Some students brought items from their countries such as games, decorations and trinkets for guests to have an interactive experience.
The expo was held from 5–6 p.m. Afterwards, a few students participating in the event got to walk onto the court with a flag from their home country. “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by Scottish band The Proclaimers played as they walked out with a voice-over announcing WSU’s international programs and students.
After the National Anthem, the international Cougs walked off the court to applause and chants as the audience showed their support for WSU diversity.
According to the WSU website, around 5.4% of students at WSU are international students.
After WSU’s victory, students gathered on the court once more for a group photo with the international athletes, bringing a close to the celebrations.
The International Center provides support for international students. The Center also holds events that celebrate their culture and helps introduce them to American celebrations.
“[At the International Center] students take part in intercultural communication opportunities, leadership roles, and a variety of global programs for the campus and community,” the WSU International Center website said. “It’s a place where all students can share their cultures; our social events frequently highlight international cultural customs and traditional U.S. celebrations.”
