ASWSU met Wednesday to vote on a new bill that aims to put its bylaws in compliance with Washington law. The bill was authored by Senator Taryn Beck and Senator Cassidy Collins and sponsored by Senator Sage Steelman.
“All meetings shall be held in accordance with appropriate laws, including but not limited to the ASWSU Constitution and university policies, and the Washington State Open Public Meetings Act (RCW 42.30),” the bill said.
The Washington State Open Public Meetings Act establishes rules and guidelines all public boards, commissions, councils, agencies and so forth must follow.
“The legislature finds and declares that all public commissions, boards, councils, committees, subcommittees, departments, divisions, offices, and all other public agencies of this state and subdivisions thereof exist to aid in the conduct of the people’s business,” RCW 42.30 said. “It is the intent of this chapter that their actions be taken openly and that their deliberations be conducted openly.”
Beck said the bill also clarifies and narrows some of the existing bylaws ASWSU has.
“We’re just offering some clarification to the bylaw since it was super broad before,” Collins said. “We need to narrow it down and just offer what exactly proceedings are being held in accordance to so the future senate can look and know what they’re actually being held to.”
This meeting came after the previous meeting where Beck and Collins addressed behavior the Judicial Board found to be ethics violations. Beck clarified this bill is not connected to the allegations the pair apologized for.
“This is for the future senate to have explicit instructions, and rules to refer to on what to follow during meets,” Beck said. “This has nothing to do with any alleged violations.”
ASWSU meets every Wednesday at 4 p.m. in CUB 204. Members of the public are welcome to sit in on these meetings.
