Three bills were passed, and three resolutions were introduced, during ASWSU’s meeting Wednesday. One of these resolutions is aimed at protected WSU’s undocumented students.
The resolution references several WSU statements regarding undocumented students.
“As a land-grant institution, [WSU] proudly subscribe to the overarching principle that higher education should be accessible to all, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, citizenship, or other protected characteristic,” WSU’s website says.
The resolution also makes note of a former student of Spokane Community College who was arrested by ICE last month on the SCC campus.
“ASWSU Senate urges WSU to maintain a strong commitment to the privacy of all student records consistent with state and federal laws, and further urges WSU to not provide information on immigration status to anyone except when required by law,” the resolution said.
Furthermore, the resolution states the ASWSU Senate urges WSU to keep resources for undocumented students intact and continue to promote them so students can have access to information and resources that could help them.
Senator Beatrice Obaob, co-author of this resolution, briefly spoke about why it is important.
“I want to reinforce the support that the ASWSU Senate has for undocumented students on campus,” Obaob said.
Also heard at this meeting was resolution 54-13, authored by Senator Leo Wilson-Ramirez. This resolution hopes to see a replacement of water stations in the CUB.
The entire 54th Senate was listed as a sponsor for this bill.
According to this resolution, a survey of 101 WSU students showed that 81 percent voted having more water stations would be beneficial in the CUB.
“It is possible, the thing is it’s a very pricey project. [We’re] quoted at about $6-7,000 per water fountain, so this resolution is more so calling for [the CUB] to make it a priority over the next couple of years and set aside money to complete that project,” Wilson-Ramirez said.
The three bills passed, 54-25, 54-26 and 54-27, were all passed with unanimous support. The bills outline what responsibilities the Vice President of ASWSU has, clarify what the internal affairs committee should do and explain the composition of the committee, respectively.
