Dear Life,
I’m not used to the weather here, and as the semester progresses, it’s getting even colder. Normally, I don’t have to bundle up much in the fall, but the Pullman weather is sneaking up on me. How do I stay warm this winter?
Sincerely, a Cold Coug.
Hello Coug! The weather in Pullman is definitely a bit different from what many students are used to. It can be very hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. While we make our way through the transitional period from fall to winter, it’s important to stay warm and comfortable, especially when you are on campus all day.
The first and most important tip is to make sure you have enough winter clothes. Depending on your needs, there are plenty of options to stay warm. One essential is a warm, insulated puffer jacket, or something that will keep you comfortable and resist the cold. The wind can get pretty strong too, so it is important to layer underneath your jacket. Wearing a long-sleeved sweater, a sweatshirt and a jacket is perfect for the cold. When it gets even colder, fleece-lined leggings, insulated pants and fuzzy socks ensure the most protection against the cold. Doubling up on all your layers is important.
However, keeping your living space warm is just as important. Whether you live in a dorm, house or apartment, the Pullman cold can sneak up on you, even at home. Sometimes, the thermostat doesn’t do us justice, but there are still ways to stay cozy. We have all gotten out of the shower cold and shivering, hiding under the blankets and wishing they were already warm. The best solution to keeping yourself warm and cozy in your bed is a heated blanket. They are available at most stores and are a great resource for chilly nights. Another great resource is a space heater. These can be found on Facebook Marketplace for a great deal, at nearby stores or on Amazon. It is important to use both of these heating resources with caution and under supervision, never leaving them unattended or sleeping with them turned on.
Lastly, don’t forget about your ears and head, especially when it’s windy! Wearing earmuffs, wool headbands, scarves and hats is a perfect way to keep the cold from hurting your ears – after all it is never pleasant to have a frozen head. Once you brave the cold on your way to class, that first wave of warmth when you step inside will feel even better.
