Fall is the perfect season for cozying up, lighting a candle and watching a movie. Whether it is Halloween, nostalgia or the crisp Autumn air, we all have a favorite comfort movie for the season. With a compiled list of student suggestions, there is a movie for every taste. WSU students shared their favorite spooky movies, making sure there is something for everyone this season.
Halloween Thrills: For many students, Halloween is not just a holiday: it is a full-on ritual. The students who are most excited for Halloween prepare by watching scary movies, hot-gluing their costumes together and carving pumpkins. Starting with “Scream”, a 1996 horror/mystery cult classic film. If you have not seen “Scream”, you have missed out on a seriously good cliche. The movie follows a high school student, Casey Becker, who receives a mysterious phone call while home alone, setting off a chain of events that would continue across six “Scream” films.
Another iconic horror film series is “Saw;” six movies, all with their own twist. The film features its iconic character, Jigsaw, a serial killer who abducts people and forces them to play elaborate, deadly games. Known for its shocking plot twists and gruesome backstory, “Saw” has become a go-to for students seeking a thrill.
“I like the suspense and horror of ‘Saw’ and ‘Scream’,” said Megan Chestine, a junior.
Fall in Film: While scary movies thrill some, others enjoy a quieter fall routine. For some students, fall is about relaxing, studying and baking with a comforting fall film playing. The 1997 film “Goodwill Hunting” is a drama featuring Robin Williams, who plays a prestigious professor who offers to mentor Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT. Hunting is discovered by the professor, who takes him under his wing and teaches Hunting about life, while the crisp fall atmosphere radiates across the screen.
With another feature from Robin Williams, “Dead Poets Society” is another fan favorite for the fall season. Williams is an English teacher in this film and works at an all-boys prep school. The institution is known for its high standards and ancient tradition, where the teacher, John Keating, challenges the usual teaching methods. The story takes place in the fall of 1959, in Delaware.
From haunting thrills to heart-warming dramas, fall has a movie for every mood. Whether you are watching a film curled up on your couch or baking to your favorite fall album, this season can mean something different to everyone. Take the time to treat yourself to a relaxing evening and savor the crisp autumn air.
