On Monday morning, WSU right-handed pitcher August Richie was awarded pitcher of the week for the Mountain West Conference. Richie takes home the award after two standout relief outings against Gardner-Webb who the Cougs swept in three games.
The junior from Tucson pitched 3.0 innings on the weekend, totaling just two hits, one walk, one strikeout and no runs. This dropped his ERA to an impressive 3.47 through 13 appearances thus far.
But, it was not just the Gardner-Webb series that sealed the deal on his conference recognition. Prior to those outings he helped the Cougs secure their 7-6 upset win over the Oregon State Beavers by spinning 2 ⅔ innings of scoreless baseball.
Tally it all up and you see exactly why he took home pitcher of the week. 5 ⅔ innings, two strikeouts, two hits, one walk, no extra-base hits and no runs. Richie has been lockdown from the right side as of late and is shaping up to be one of WSU’s go to late game closers.
The Cougs head on the road to take on UNLV this coming weekend. The series starts on April 17 and concludes on April 19 down in Las Vegas, Nevada.
