Cougars came from behind to defeat Bulldogs Tuesday

All WSU runs came in the seventh and eighth innings

WSU baseball (26-17, 7-13) took the series victory against the Bulldogs Tuesday with a come-from-behind 9-6 victory. 

After two innings the Cougs were down 2-0. Then, after six innings the score was 3-0. 

The Cougs scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead, which was taken away in the top of the eighth as Gonzaga scored three runs to reclaim the 6-5 lead. 

In the bottom of the eighth, the Cougs added four more runs to take complete control of the game, and win 9-6. 

This was the third time the Cougs and Bulldogs met this season, all three games were played as one-game series. The Cougs won two-of-three this season against Gonzaga.

Starting pitcher Spencer Jones went three innings for the Cougs. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two batters. 

Caden Kaelber picked up his fourth win of the season for the Cougs as he pitched one scoreless inning where he allowed one hit and a walk. 

Although Sam Brown did not pick up an RBI in the game, he had help from his teammates. Jacob McKeon had two RBIs and Jonah Advincula had an RBI and scored two runs himself. Elijah Hainline also added two hits and two RBIs in the game. 

Scoring Innings:

Top 2nd: Two Gonzaga Runs

The Bulldogs struck first in the game as they added two runs in the top of the second inning. The two runs were scored on a two-RBI single.

Top 6th: 1 Gonzaga Run

Gonzaga extended their lead by one in the top of the sixth as the Bulldogs hit a solo homer to lead WSU 3-0. 

Bottom 7th: 5 WSU Runs

The Cougs had a huge answer in the bottom of the seventh as they taxed the Bulldogs for five runs to take the late lead. 

Hainline got the scoring started as he hit an RBI single, scoring Cam Magee. After a throwing error on the bunt attempt from Jacob Morrow, Hainline scored to cut the lead to one. 

Advincula then single to score Jake Harvey and Morrow scored an unearned run on the play from a throwing error. The final run was scored by an RBI single from McKeon to give WSU the 5-3 lead.

Top 8th: 3 Gonzaga Runs

The Cougs come-from-behind lead only last the inning as the Bulldogs answered with three runs in the top of the eighth. The Bulldogs scored their three runs off an RBI double and a two-RBI single to lead 6-5.

Bottom 8th: 4 WSU Runs

After an offensive inning of five runs from the Cougs, their next offensive inning saw them score four more runs to take the 9-6 lead and control the game to close. 

Hainline got the scoring started with an RBI double that scored Magee. After another bunt and another throwing error from the Bulldogs, Hainline scored to give WSU the 7-6 lead.

A final throwing error from the Bulldogs allowed Harvey to score which was followed by an RBI double from McKeon to end the score 9-6 in favor of the Cougs. 

The Bulldogs made four errors in the game, all of which were costly and caused the Bulldogs to lose the game.

The next time the Cougs take the field will be Friday as they host the Washington Huskies for the last installment of the baseball Apple Cup taking place during graduation weekend. First pitch Friday will be at 7 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
