WSU student dies in car crash on I-90 Tuesday

A WSU student died after hitting a pickup truck on I-90 east of Kittitas around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Washington State Trooper Brian Moore said the driver of the pickup truck was headed east and lost control after swerving around an animal in the roadway. The vehicle flipped and remained in the road.

Moore said Shannon Prendergast, a 20-year-old student from Everett, hit the truck in her vehicle and rolled about a quarter mile before hitting a guardrail.

Moore believes Prendergast didn’t see the pickup truck because it was dark and she died when she hit the vehicle. The momentum from the initial impact caused the pickup truck to roll.

Moore said troopers are currently looking for a blue Peterbilt semi-truck that hit the flipped pickup truck after Prendergast’s accident and drove away.

He said the semi-truck was not involved in the fatality.
