The WSU women’s soccer team celebrates with Butch T. Cougar after defeating Weber State 3-1, Aug. 27, 2023, in Pullman, Wash.

WSU Athletics announced the hiring of Scott Halasz to the Cougar women’s soccer coaching staff Friday.

Bringing with him over 20 years of coaching experience, Halasz will assume the position of assistant head coach, having previously served in the same position at University of Utah.

“Scott’s attention to details, recruiting base, and his success on the West Coast fits in perfectly with our program,” head coach Todd Shulenberger said in a WSU Athletics press release.

Halasz spent six of his 11 years with the Utes as associate head coach. Halasz oversaw the Utes during their 2013, 2016 and 2019 NCAA Tournament campaigns, with 2016 marking the highest finish in Utah’s history.

Prior to his time in Salt Lake City, Halasz coached at the collegiate level at Pacific Lutheran University. Halasz also coached at Tacoma Community College, the Washington Premier Soccer Club and various Olympic Development Program and Elite Development Program teams throughout Washington.

A Seattle native, Halasz is a graduate of Seattle University.

“This is such a good hire! Awesome coach and person! He’s gonna do such good things for this program,” team alumnus and current Portland Thorns forward Morgan Weaver commented on Instagram.

The WSU soccer team went 9-6-4 with a conference record of 2-5-4 during its 2023 season. Shulenberger will be returning for his 10th season with the Cougs in 2024 and holds the program’s all-time win record at 98. In their upcoming season, the Cougs will participate in the West Coast Conference as affiliate members, a two-year agreement that includes nine other WSU sports.
