After a brief campaign, the uncontested candidates for ASWSU president and vice president officially claimed victory during the Wednesday night election. Isaac Velazquez and Grace Carpenter will serve as president and vice president, respectively.
“It’s been good to start preparing, like start officially preparing that and getting that process underway,” Velazquez said. “We’re gonna have to hit the ground running.”
Velazquez and Carpenter said they intend to start preparing by selecting staff. They also intend to add a position, bringing the executive staff up to 14.
Executive staff make anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 each semester. The president and vice president also get tuition and cost of living paid for. Velazquez said he intends to live up to the high salary by showing commitment.
“I think it’s just it’s gonna show from the work that we do, and we both have a really heavy commitment to this and we’re planning on making sacrifices where we need to,” Velazquez said. “I think it’s gonna be an investment for the school and something that will turn out to be positive for the community.”
Carpenter pointed out one of these commitments is working more than 20 hours a week, the minimum hours the president and vice president must work each week.
“We’re going to be putting in more than just 20 hours, it’s going to be like our heart, our soul and our time to dedicate ourselves to the students on everything that they need,” Carpenter said.
Velazquez said the first thing he and Carpenter will do upon taking office is communicate their values.
“I think the first thing is communicating our values in our mission,” he said. “It’ll be really setting up our values. I think we’ll be speaking at the Chancellor’s Awards.”
Velazquez and Carpenter hope to promote campus safety, encouraging campus engagement and improving basic needs on campus during their term. Velazquez said he and Carpenter have been talking and planning about these issues for over a year now.
