WSU fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi has been shut down until May 2030 for hazing.
According to WSU’s Sam’s Law website, the fraternity pressured new members to consume alcohol and cannabis, and punished them with cleaning duties. The fraternity also forced new members to do “physical activities” for failing the new member quizzes.
Alpha Sigma Phi was previously sanctioned in 2020 for hazing.
Fraternity Sigma Chi was also recently put on social probation for chaining the fraternity house’s front doors shut during a social event.
The fraternity will also be required to participate in fire code and safety training from the Pullman Fire Department. In 2023, the fraternity was sanctioned for giving alcohol to minors and again in 2024 for fighting with members of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Phi Gamma Delta is under investigation for hazing, alcohol violations and physical harm or violation. Fraternities Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Nu are also under investigation for alcohol violations and reckless endangerment. Sigma Nu also violated COVID regulations in October 2020.
New WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell said previously she wants to meet with the leaders of every house twice a year.
“I would expect to be meeting with Greek life early and I’m not talking about the administrative side, I am talking about the student leadership side,” Cantwell said. “Where I come from, Greek life is intimately associated with service. So the question I start with in meeting with student leaders in Greek life is how and what is your service orientation and how can I help you in that service?”
