Senior guard Nate Calmese, who entered the transfer portal about a month ago, is reportedly heading to Wake Forest.
“Washington State transfer guard Nate Calmese has committed to Wake Forest, he tells @On3sports,” wrote Joe Tipton of On3Sports on X.
Calmese reportedly also visited Villanova and was considering Baylor and St. John’s. However, he ultimately landed with the Demon Deacons. WSU has become familiar with Wake Forest this year, with multiple football players and coaches also transferring to play for the Demon Deacons.
Last year Calmese led the Cougars with 15.2 points per game. He started every game of the season for WSU outside of their final loss to Georgetown. He established himself as a solid shooter, making 47.4% of his attempts, though he struggled from behind the arc, where he only made 29.1% of his shots.
He also averaged three rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals. Calmese did have a weakness when it came to turnovers. His 99 turnovers were third most in the WCC.
Nathaniel Noftz, writing for Last Word on Sports, said the addition was a risk for the Demon Deacons, but ultimately backed the move.
“In some regards, this is a riskier signing for the Demon Deacons,” Noftz said. “It’s a good risk to take on a high-scoring player from a relatively strong mid-major conference.”
Calmese now joins his fourth school in four years. He spent his freshman season with Lamar, then transferred to Washington, then Washington State and now Wake Forest.
After his last game as a Coug, Calmese expressed his gratitude for his time at WSU.
“It’s just been a blessing, changed my life,” Calmese said. “Wasn’t probably in the right mental space coming out of UW … had a coach that trusted me, gave me the ball in my hands … you know, it’s just been a blessing for sure.”
