New WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell may have to take up two months of unpaid furlough each year as part of WSU’s system-wide budget reduction, according to the WSU Board of Regents minutes from Feb. 6.
According to the contract, Cantwell can be subject to up to 60 days of unpaid furlough, with 30 days notice.
This is part of WSU’s system-wide re-evaluation of spending amid federal and state funding cuts.
Former President Kirk Schulz also voluntarily took furlough days early into his time as president, according to WSU spokesperson Phil Weiler. Schulz is slated to receive $765,000, per a modification to his contract in 2020– during his year-long sabbatical starting June 30, according to the Lewiston Tribune.
It is unknown at this moment if the new president will have to take any or all of the furlough.
“At this point in time, there is no way to know if the legislature will include furloughs for state workers in the budget for the next biennium,” Weiler said. “We’ll have a little better idea once the Washington House and Senate agree on a budget proposal to send to the governor. Ultimately, nothing will be final until the governor signs the budget bill.”
In March, WSU announced in March that it would be freezing all non-essential spending to try to tame the budget crisis.
Cantwell will receive a $735,000 base salary and can receive a $150,000 incentive bonus for meeting annual goals set by the Board of Regents.
Another notable item in Cantwell’s contract is a requirement she attend all home football games. She is also required to stay in the Ida Lou Anderson house until the end of the calendar year.

Seems like a waste of money to pay the outgoing President the same amount as he was receiving despite his job duties clearly diminishing. Meanwhile departments can’t fill needed vacancy’s and current staff are being denied any promotion’s even if they’ve been going above and beyond their job descriptions for months already.
