By this point, everyone who has been following the Pac-12 situation knows that the conference needs at least one more full member to be considered for the postseason come 2026.
That means the conference must add a school that plays football. Currently, the Pac has seven. The magic number is eight. However, in my dream realignment scenario, the Pac-12 would add three more full schools (and one more for non-football schools). Here is what my dream new-look Pac-12 would look like.
- UNLV for all sports
UNLV has committed to the Mountain West, but the truth is that nothing is set in stone, and everything can change on a whim these days in college sports. The Rebels finished strong last year in football and have consistently fielded strong basketball teams recently as well. While UNLV is by no means an athletic or financial powerhouse, they have two major advantages.
Coming from Las Vegas, UNLV has the benefit of a big city fanbase and a major media market. That certainly helps UNLV’s case to join the PAC. And with a solid athletic program, it would make a lot of sense for the Pac-12 to target them. They also share a natural rivalry with Utah State.
2. Memphis and Tulane for all sports
Sadly, this still feels more like a pipe dream than reality, although rumors indicate there are still conversations about bringing over the AAC’s top two programs into the Pac-12. More likely than a full realignment might be the possibility of a Pac-12/AAC scheduling agreement that could help bring revenue to both conferences by bringing more competitive nonconference games.
Still, if Memphis and Tulane are interested, the Pac-12 would be wise to welcome them with open arms. Memphis has been consistently among the top non-Power 5 programs in both football and men’s basketball, the two biggest moneymaker sports. Tulane, while struggling on the court, has been ranked in back-to-back seasons in football. Tulane also holds a similar advantage to UNLV, based in the major media market of New Orleans.
3. Saint Mary’s for all sports besides football
Adding Gonzaga’s biggest basketball rival not only adds more drama to the Pac-12; it would drastically raise the ceiling of an already fantastic basketball conference. The Pac-12 already boasts strong basketball programs, including SDSU, Gonzaga, Boise State, Utah State and Colorado State. Adding Saint Mary’s would be more than just the icing on the cake. Saint Mary’s has consistently emerged as the top contender against Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference and has now made back-to-back NCAA tournaments. Are the Gaels content dominating the WCC, or do they want some real competition in the Pac-12?
This is just my hope, but if the Pac-12 could add these four schools, they would reach 12 total schools and 10 for football. It would add a level of competitiveness in all the major sports, allowing the Pac-12 to reclaim its place as a true power conference.

Pacific should add Memphis, Tulane, Texas State, UTSA all sports, St Mary’s in basketball… ASAP…Consider UNLV and Nevada in next few years once UNLV gets it financials in order.. if pac 12 and mountain west come to a agreement for lower exit fees then …..add all 7 programs by 2027… Or just merge with mountain west.. Pacific mountain conference.. PMC or pacific coast conference..PCC..

Your dream is definately best case scenario. Stay away from Texas teams, although U of No.Tex would be better than both TX St and UTSA. Sac St is a give up too.
Adding Rebels, Tulane and Memphis would be great destinations as well. Nice article

I think your dream reconstructed PAC is exactly what the conference leadership intended. But then life happened. The realities like UNLV being severely cash strapped, Nevarez’ heavy handed yet understandible defensive tactics, and the geographic and economic disadvantages associated with adding top AAC teams. There are more to list but let’s not beat a dead horse. If the PAC were to end up as you have dreamed I would be ecstatic.
