After months of reporting little to no cases, Whitman County Public Health announced Friday it is investigating two cases of whooping cough, pushing the county back into outbreak status.
The cases are epi-linked, meaning they came from the same source.
Whitman County has six reported cases of whooping cough in 2025. At the end of 2024, there were 86 reported cases of whooping cough in the county, which was up drastically from one reported case in 2023.
Washington State has 1,532 reported cases so far this year.
WSU requires all students to receive one dose of the TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough/pertussis) vaccine in the last 10 years or one dose after turning 18.
