Whether you are an incoming first year student or returning to your college town from a chill summer, the first week back can sometimes be a shock to your system and routine. Unless you’re Butch T. Cougar getting ready to hype up first-year students at 7 a.m., you probably are less thrilled for early alarms and syllabus quizzes.
Thankfully, Pullman knows some tricks to make the transition a little easier.
Kick off the week strong by moving your body. During the first week of classes, UREC members are invited to attend fitness classes for free at the Student Recreation Center and the Chinook. Try out that yoga class you have always wanted to try, or enjoy a weight lifting class. Move, stretch, sweat, for free, so why not?
Need to spice up your dorm room and make it feel more like home? Poster Invasion will be on the Terrell Mall on Aug. 17-20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. At the start of each semester, this woman-owned business Poster Invasion sets up booths at universities that sell art and posters to make your dorm room feel less bare.
The ASWSU will host ‘Floats on the Mall’ on Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. Grab a coca-cola float on your way home from class, it is perfect for an afternoon pick me up.
The first week of classes is the prime time to get involved on campus, dozens of clubs and organizations hold open houses. Organizations on campus like the Center for Student Originization and Leadership, Cougs for Recovery or the Native American Student Center are hosting events. These open houses are a great way to build community and socialize.
Take a break from the heat and syllabus quizzes and stroll through the art museum. On Tuesday at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, world renowned sculptor and artist Anish Kapoor’s ‘Dissolving Margins’ exhibition opens. Kapoor’s exhibit explores his more than four-decade-long passion for printmaking.
Not only does Kapoor’s exhibit open on Aug. 19, the ‘Color Outside the Lines’ exhibition also opens. Pieces from an array of artists showcase how color is used to portray beliefs and institutions, as well as beauty and culture. The Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation will host these exhibits from Aug. 19 to March 14.
If you are waiting for your bid-day results, memorizing the bus schedule or already overwhelmed with next week’s quiz, WSU’s Pullman campus is here to support you.
These events are not only hosted for the kickoff to the school year, it’s a way to build community and find your home away from home. Like the wise Andy Grammar once said, we always find our way back home.
