WSU announced Tuesday it identified a student diagnosed with whooping cough.
This is the first confirmed case of a WSU student with whooping cough this academic year.
This comes after two related cases were identified by Whitman County Public Health last month. Whitman county has had nine confirmed cases this year, while Washington State has 1,663 reported cases so far this year.
At the end of 2024, there were 86 reported cases of whooping cough in the county, which was up from one reported case in 2023.
WSU requires all students to receive one dose of the TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough/pertussis) vaccine in the last 10 years or one dose after turning 18.
