Two students at WSU have been diagnosed with whooping cough, the university announced Wednesday.
People living in dormitories or fraternity/sorority housing are at an increased risk of whooping cough, WSU determined after a comprehensive test.
The first case of whooping cough this academic year was confirmed by WSU Aug. 19.
Two people in Whitman county were diagnosed with whooping cough in July prior to this, with nine cases being diagnosed this year, according to Whitman County Public Health. Washington State has reported 1,773 cases this year.
At the end of 2024, the county had reported 86 cases of whooping cough, which was an increase from one diagnosis in 2023.
WSU’s policy for vaccines requires all students to receive one dose of the TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough/pertussis) vaccine in the last ten years or after turning 18.
