The Disabled Student Center has been moved to the basement of the Terrell Library in an effort to make it more convenient to students.
Madeline Joyce, the first full-time coordinator of DSC, said that students reported the Washington Building’s location wasn’t accessible because of the hills surrounding the Washington Building. The center was previously located on the second floor of the building.
“It made sense to start there,” Joyce said. “But [students] weren’t seeing the value and effort to get down to the Washington Building.”
According to Joyce, compared to August 2024, the DSC has seen an increase of 367% in student attendance rates.
“We knew we wanted to be more centrally located,” Joyce said.
Joyce was hired in July. Before she became coordinator, DSC was being run by the Student Accommodations and Disability Resource Office. She was hired while DSC was in the process of moving and executed all details regarding the current center apart from that it is in a new location.
River Adonis, the previous coordinator of the DSC, was on the original board that started the center, where they were involved with figuring out the original location for DSC.
Adonis was not involved in the process of moving but was asked by the Student Accommodations and Disability Resource Office if they agreed on the new location.
“[It] is a great idea,” Adonis said. “We have a lot more space now.”
