Washington state now has the second highest gas price in the United States.
As of Monday, Washington state’s average gas price is 4.616 dollars, compared to the national average of 3.184 dollars. Whitman County’s average gas price is 4.460 dollars.
In comparison, Idaho has an average of 3.520 dollars. 15 minutes across the border, where Moscow is located, Latah County’s average gas price is 3.559 dollars.
Lily Benavides, a first-year student at WSU, stated that this difference, paired with the small amount of time it takes to get to Moscow, incentivizes her and others to buy gas in Idaho as opposed to Washington.
“Financially speaking, I think it is a lot better to get your gas in Idaho,” Benavides said. “When I’ve had people come to visit me and they need to get gas for their car, I’m always like ‘you need to go to Idaho for your gas’ because it’s so expensive out here and [Moscow is] so close that you might as well.”
