The UW student charged with the shooting of a WSU offensive lineman appeared in court Friday for his arraignment, during which he pleaded not guilty to charges of 1st degree assault and 4th degree assault, despite alleged video evidence.
Jakori Buchanan, the 20-year-old student accused of the Sep. 21 shooting, has been held in the Whitman County Jail since his booking on Sep. 30, according to his inmate listing.
Buchanan allegedly shot 19-year-old victim Sone Falealo after an altercation at an Aspen Heights apartment party. Sone, a WSU football player, was allegedly working as door security at the party.
Sone was rushed into surgery to remove a bullet from his abdomen following the shooting, according to court documents. He has since been recovering according to officials.
Buchanan and his attorney requested a reduction to the bond amount of $10,000, which was denied by Whitman County Superior Court Judge Roger Sandberg.
Buchanan’s attorney Ronnie Rae maintains his client acted in self-defense, according to court documents.
Buchanan’s trial date is set to begin Dec. 8, according to the court hearing and court documents.
Buchanan will remain in jail until his next court appearance on Nov. 21 for a readiness hearing or until he posts bail.
