Two teams are four wins away from being crowned champions in the World Series, the last round of the playoffs. The Championship Series had the one and two seeds play each other on both sides of the bracket, the top teams each league had to offer.
Now that the World Series is the star of the show, do not forget what brought them there. One team had a pitcher go a full nine innings, pitching a complete game. A starting pitcher was able to go six innings, without allowing a run, and then had three home runs come from the other side of the ball. Finally, a team able to get a win being down 0-2 and playing on the road. These are the top pitching performances of the MLB Playoffs Championship Series.
3) Toronto Blue Jays vs. Seattle Mariners (Game three)
Starting pitcher Shane Bebier went 6.0 innings, allowing four hits, one walk, eight strikeouts and two runs. The two runs came off a two-run home run from Julio Rodriguez. The bullpen was able to allow two hits, zero walks and one additional strikeout. There were two runs earned, which came off back-to-back home runs by Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh.
The Blue Jays needed a win to get back on track as the Mariners were able to win back-to-back games in Toronto, going up 2-0 in the series, with the next three games being in Seattle. For the rest of the series, the Mariners and Blue Jays exchanged games. The Blue Jays won the next two games of the series. At 2-2, the Mariners were able to win game five, and the Blue Jays won game six and seven and the series, advancing to the World Series.
2) Los Angeles Dodgers vs Milwaukee Brewers (Game two)
Starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto was the only pitcher the Dodgers used. He was able to pitch a complete game. In nine innings, he only allowed for three hits and one walk while recording seven strikeouts. He allowed only one run; the one run came on a home run by Jackson Chourio on the very first pitch of the game.
The last time a complete game was pitched in the Champion Series was Justin Verlander in 2017. This was only Yamamoto’s second playoff appearance this season and his first win in the playoffs. Going a full nine innings and allowing the only run coming off the first pitch of the game is impressive. The Dodgers were able to win the game 5-1, going up 2-0 in the series, and ultimately advancing to the World Series.
1) Los Angeles Dodgers Vs Milwaukee Brewers (Game four)
Starter Shohei Ohtani went 6.0 innings, allowing only two hits and zero runs. Additionally, he had three walks and 10 strikeouts. In three innings of relief for the Dodgers, three hits were allowed, an additional strikeout was earned and one run was scored. The run came on a double play fielder’s choice, where a runner from third was able to score. The Dodgers were able to end the game with five hits, three walks, 11 strikeouts and only one run scored.
Throughout the whole Championship Series, the Dodgers were able to perform. Ohtani was able to have a strong performance on the mound, and then stepped up to the plate and producd. In his three at bats, he went deep three times, also drawing a walk. In game four, a win for the Dodgers would send them to the World Series, and they delivered, winning the game 5-1.
Expect to see the Dodgers having starting pitchers go longer due to their strong starting pitcher rotation. The bullpen usually goes about three-four innings in relief. Expect to see the Toronto Blue Jays rely more on their bullpen, seeing their bullpen usually go about five innings in relief. Game one of the World Series starts on Friday in Toronto.
