The Cougars ended the season with a record of (7-7-5) overall and (5-4-2) in conference play. This got them a finish of No. 7 in the West Coast Conference. This is the Cougars’ last year in the WCC as an affiliate member, next year they will take on new competition as the Pac-12 conference is revived.
Before the season started, the Cougars were projected to finish No. 5 in the West Coast Conference. Redshirt fifth-year defender Jenna Studer was named to the all-WCC preseason first team. Seniors Maggie Mace, Peyton Price and Studer were named team captains. Prior to the season, freshman Rhen Ericson suffered a season ending injury.Â
In non-conference play, the Cougars went 2-3-3. The first win came against UC San Diego on Sept.11. The game ended 1-0 with the lone goal being scored by redshirt-senior Jordyn Young. This was also head coach Todd Shulenberger’s 200th match coached. Their second win came on Sept. 18 against North Dakota State University. The game ended 2-0 with goals scored on a penalty kick from Mace and a shot by grad student Abigail Sidall that found the back of the net. In this match redshirt-senior Keara Fitzgerald suffered a season ending injury. transfer Zora Standifer came into the game.
The Cougars saw their two losses in their first game of the season on Aug. 14 losing to Utah State 1-0. The other loss came against UC Irvine on Sept. 14 falling 2-0. This match had Studer go down with a season ending injury. The third loss for the Cougs was in the last game of conference play against Montana, where WSU fell 1-0.
The team saw three straight ties during non-conference play. The first of the three was against Idaho on Aug. 28. Sophomore Audrey Shackelford had arguably the best goal of the season for the Cougars. Her goal tied the game. The second tie was against No. 13 ranked Georgia. Ava Ghoreishi was able to score the lone goal, and they led for parts of the game. Georgia would be able to find the back of the net to get the equalizer. The final tie came against California where the game ended scoreless.   Â
In WCC conference play the Cougs went 5-4-2. The Cougars started off conference play hot with a 4-2 win over Seattle University. This game had four different goal scores and the Cougars were up 4-0 at halftime. The next win came on Oct.11 against LMU with a 2-0 win. The goals came from Jordyn Young and Journey Middleborn. The third win for the Cougs came on Oct. 22 against Oregon State. Mitchell was able to find the game winning goal on a freekick, the game ended 1-0. The Cougs won the last two games of conference play beating San Francisco 3-0 and a comeback win against Pacific in the final game of conference play.Â
The first loss in conference play was against Santa Clara where goalkeeper Standifer saw red for handing the ball outside of the 18-yard box. Additionally Shulenberger was given two yellows which turned into a red card. With Fitzgerald going down, the Cougs looked to freshman Sidney Venier. The Cougars second loss was against Saint Mary’s suffering a 1-0 loss. In this game Price went down with a season ending injury. The next loss for the Cougs was against Portland, falling 1-0. The fourth and final loss was against Pepperdine. This was a windy and rainy game where the Cougars fell 1-0. Â
The two draws on the season were against San Diego with Venier in goal and Shulenberger out. Young was able to score. San Diego was also able to find the back on the net ending in a 1-1 tie. The second tie was against Gonzaga where Mitchell found the back of the net off of a header but Gonzaga was able to level it ending in a 1-1 tie.Â
Cougar soccer suffered a lot of injuries and suffered a lot of adversity this season, but has a bright future.
