After a much needed break from classes, students are settling back in for the home stretch of the semester and preparing for the holiday season. Students around campus agree that one thing never fails to get them in the holiday spirit: Christmas movies
Whether you prefer a classic, comedies or rom-coms, everybody has one film they come back to year after year during the holidays.
Some movies you hear about every year. Big names such as “Elf” or “Home Alone” are more than movies for some, they are a tradition. With the start of the holiday season, these movies offer familiar comfort during a busy time of the semester.
Some students swear by the classics they grew up with, while some look to find a new movie every year.
For WSU sophomore Ryan Hetson the question “what is your favorite Christmas movie?” was not a hard one.
“‘Home Alone’ for sure, I’m not sure how many times I watched it. I tried to recreate some of the traps myself a couple of times.” said Hetson.“Watching it feels like when school is out and you don’t have to think about anything stressful. gets me excited for Christmas and the break.”
Students agree that whatever your favorite Christmas movie might be, putting on something familiar has a way of slowing your brain down when everything else feels like it is speeding up.
“‘The Holiday’ is probably my favorite. It’s just cozy and I’ve seen it so many times. It’s something I can just put on and pay attention to here and there after a long day.” said Ella Jurrans, a freshman at WSU.“Even if it’s just a couple of hours it helps you take a step back from the hectic time in the semester.”
The reminder that the holidays are just around the corner keeps students motivated to push through this semester. The best way to do so is to fall into the familiarity of the Christmas movies we hold onto.
No matter the genre or decade, Christmas movies hold a special place in holiday traditions offering nostalgia and a brief break from the pressure of school work.
From romcoms to cheesy, poorly edited classics, these movies and many more give students a place to slow down in even the busiest of times, and enjoy some holiday magic.
