The Pullman Police posted their response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement concerns on their Instagram and Facebook pages Thursday morning.
“Pullman PD does not enforce federal laws, including immigration,” the post said. “We do not assist federal law enforcement agencies with immigration enforcement efforts.”
The department said they follow and uphold Washington State law, including the Keep Washington Working Act.
The act, which was established in 2019, limits state or local law enforcement’s involvement in federal civil immigration law enforcement. It prohibits local law enforcement agencies from asking for information about a person’s immigration or citizenship status unless the information is related to a criminal investigation, according to the Washington Attorney General’s Office website.
Pullman PD said they do not collect or share immigration information.
The department also said that they are unaware of any current enforcement activity by ICE in or around Pullman.
“Pullman Police officers and supervisors evaluate the lawful authority of all law enforcement activities which take place within the city,” the department said. “The mission of the Pullman PD is to provide professional police services that prioritize public safety, quality of life, and the rights of all.”
Pullman PD does not, however, have the authority to obstruct any federal law enforcement agency from carrying out their duties, said the department. They also reminded community members that obstructing any law enforcement agency was illegal and dangerous.
The department said concerned community members are encouraged to review lawful free speech and assembly, legislative processes, and the court system.
“Pullman is a special place to celebrate, serve and protect,” the department said. “Our agency will continue working to provide safety and accountability, in service of all members of our community.”
