I was welcomed with warm spices as we walked into Namaste Kitchen and Cocktails on Feb. 17. The Indian restaurant had opened a week earlier.
We were seated quickly after our server cleaned a table for us. I was immediately struck by the inclusiveness of the menu.
There were clear indicators for gluten-free, vegan and halal options. The entree section of the menu gave a choice of chicken, lamb, goat, fish, shrimp or vegetables.
There was even an entire section of the menu dedicated to vegetarian meals and a tandoor section as well, which is a style of cooking using a traditional clay oven. After deliberating with my boyfriend, we ordered papadum, chicken nirvana, chicken mango curry and a mango Shikanji soda mocktail.
The mocktail arrived first and was sweet, tangy and bright. The mango puree at the bottom was smooth and the soda layer on top had an acidic zing and a completely different texture, which made it very fun to drink.
We were happy to find that we did not have to wait long for our food. Our appetizer of papadum and our entrees all came out at the same time.
The copper-colored serving bowls full of our main courses and rice looked beautiful and were hot as they were placed on the table.
The papadum was a thin fried wafer, and although only two came with the order, each one was the size of a plate. I had not previously seen papadum with spices embedded throughout, which gave our appetizer a nice kick.
We had ordered no spice on our entrees for our first go around at Namaste, and found it to be flavorful and not spicy at all. My boyfriend and I hope to try the next level up on our next visit.
The chicken nirvana was warm and comforting, and the papadum complemented it well. The mocktail also contrasted the warmth with its tartness.
The portions were fair, and we did not end up needing take-out containers. My boyfriend and I left full, speaking about when we could come again.
