WSU baseball faced off against Texas State on Friday, March 6 for game two of a doubleheader. After winning the first game of the day 9-7, WSU looked to get the sweep on the day.
Senior pitcher Griffin Smith took the mound and was very solid early on, only allowing three hits in the first five innings. The lone run he allowed in those five innings was a solo shot to Clayton Namken in the bottom of the third.
WSU evened the score in the top of the fifth thanks to a solo blast by Cam Macleod. The junior catcher from Vancouver, B.C has gotten off to a slow start this season, but had an outstanding day, supplying the Cougs with three RBIs.
In the sixth inning the Bobcats offense broke out, plating three runs from a single by Jaquae Stewart and a two-run home run from Dawson Park. This offensive rally gave Texas State a 4-1 lead over the Cougars.
Texas State continued their offensive momentum in the seventh inning where two doubles and a three-run home run by Manny Salas earned the Bobcats a commanding 10-1 lead.
In the top of the ninth, the Cougs scored three runs, resulting in a final score of 10-4. Two of those runs were because of another Cam Macleod home run, his second of the game.
Even in a 10-4 loss, there were some things to highlight for WSU. Starting pitcher Griffin Smith limited a high powered Texas State offense to only one run through five innings. Smith has been a consistent and solid pitcher for the Cougs all season.
Cam Macleod had his best game of the season going 2-for-4 with two home runs may be a sign for good things to come for the catcher.
The Cougs will finish the weekend series on Sunday March 8 after inclement weather postponed the game on Saturday March 7.
