On Monday morning, freshman catcher Alexandre Giguère won Freshman of the Week honors for the Mountain West Conference. This comes after a standout weekend against Texas State University, where the Canadian batted .363, slugged 1.182 and had five RBI’s off of three home runs.
Giguère has not seen much action this season. Prior to the Texas State series, the freshman from Quebec only played in three games, starting just one of them. During that period he batted .250 off of one hit and one RBI.
This past weekend however, he blew those figures out of the water. In game one of the Texas State series, Giguère was one of four separate Cougs to smack a home run. His long ball came in the fifth inning when he yanked a shot into left field.
Then, in game two, Giguère doubled his total by launching two home runs just four innings apart. His first was a three-run shot in the fourth inning. The second was a solo homer in the eighth. Those two long balls helped solidify a 9-7 win over the Bobcats, the only win the Cougs would secure in the weekend.
It was not until game four when Giguère got back behind the dish. In his last appearance of the weekend, Giguère went 1-for-4 and came around to score in the seventh, much quieter than his previous two showings. Despite this, the Cougs still lost 4-3 and dropped the series 1-3 against the Bobcats.
As one of three catching options tested out thus far in the non-conference slate, Giguère’s performance in Texas may have won him a starting spot moving forward. Giguère now leads the Cougs in home runs with three and OPS at 1.375.
On top of that, he is second in average (.333), fifth for RBI’s (6), fifth for runs scored (5) and eighth for hits (5). He has done this in just six games played and only 15 at-bats.
The Cougs retake the diamond later this week when they open up MWC play against San Diego State University starting on March 13 and ending on March 15 in San Diego.
