On Monday, Washington State outfielder Matt Priest was awarded freshman of the week by the Mountain West Conference after he helped the Cougars sweep Grand Canyon University over the weekend.
Priest filled the statsheet both offensively and defensively all week, including hitting his first collegiate home run, delivering a walk-off hit and throwing out a GCU runner at home plate.
Priest began his standout week with a three-hit performance against Utah on Tuesday. This earned Priest a promotion up to second in the batting order for the GCU series, and he did not disappoint.
Collectively over the week, Priest hit .278 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs and an assist in the outfield. Priest made a number of monumental plays to propel the Cougars to a 3-0 start at home this season.
The San Diego native became the second Cougar to take home freshman of the week honors this season, as WSU will look to continue their strong start to Mountain West play this weekend against Nevada.
