Water main breaks on Illinois Street

Residents on parts of Indiana and Illinois streets were without water Monday for about six hours as crews worked to fix a water main break on Illinois Street.

The 600 block of Illinois Street and the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Indiana Street were affected by the break.

The break occurred in a pre-1980 cast-iron pipe and was discovered sometime this morning or late last night, Kevin Gardes, director of public works, said.

“When you don’t have water, everybody notices that pretty quickly,” Gardes said.

A two- to three-foot section of the pipe was cut out and replaced with PVC, which is more resistant to corrosion and future breaks, Gardes said.

The City of Pullman deals with six to 12 such breaks per year, Gardes said, and this repair was fairly routine.

By around mid-afternoon all residents on the affected streets had water, Gardes said.
