The Evergreen Athlete of the Week for Sept. 2-9 is Cougar volleyball’s redshirt junior middle blocker Jocelyn Urias.

WSU volleyball took on Illinois State University last Friday and Urias was at the forefront of the Cougars 3-1 victory.

This would be the first match of the weekend where the team would play three matches in less than 24 hours. Urias played a phenomenal match and put together a highlight reel performance. Her play against the Redbirds was one well-deserving of Athlete of the Week honors.

Urias had a career-high number of kills with 18 in the match. She helped lead the team to victory with her .571 attack percentage and four block assists. Her impressive kill count also helped her receive player of the match honors.

Urias felt the team played very well against Illinois State, especially when it came to defense.

“We played really well defending them, especially because they have really good hitters,” Urias said. “We did a good job blocking them.”

Head Coach Jen Greeny also noticed Urias’ high level of play against the Redbirds. Greeny said there was a system in place which utilized both middles to strike and Urias happened to be on the end of that effort.
