Ghost signs and sleeping giants
March 2, 2016
The above photos are from the upcoming exhibit “Sleeping Giants: The Ephemera of Ghost Signs” at The Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. An opening reception will be held March 5. The exhibit is open March 3 – 26 and features photos of faded painted signs. The artist, Melissa Rackham, sees the abandoned signs from around the country as “sleeping giants.” She mounts the photos on wood and puts an encaustic wax finish over them to reflect both the preservation and deterioration found in the subject matter. Rackham is a fine art photographer and instructor at Spokane Community College, according to the Artisans at the Dahmen Barn website.
