HEALTH:
Flaxseeds have a high fiber content and are a great source of Omega 3. Fiber is crucial for smooth digestion and regular bowel movements. Two tablespoon of flax contains about four grams of dietary fiber, according to the Healthy Flax website. This may cause bloating for those who first start consuming flax, so it is recommended to start with small amounts and build up to about one to two tablespoons per serving. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid, so our body does not make it itself. Therefore, it is crucial we ingest it regularly, according to Healthy Flax. Omega 3 is important for our inflammatory system, which can prevent many inflammatory-based diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, heart disease and diabetes. This fatty acid can also be found in certain fish and fish oil.

USES:
Flaxseeds are most useful when ground up, because the body is able to absorb more nutrients, and the whole seeds may not digest completely. To solve this, one can use a coffee grinder to grind up the seeds or just buy the flax pre-ground. Ground flaxseeds are not only full of health benefits, but can be used as a simple egg replacement when approximately one tablespoon of flax is mixed with three tablespoons of water. They form an egg-like mixture when stirred together. This can be found in many recipes, but may vary by recipe. A simple way to incorporate flax into everyday life is by adding it to smoothies as a thickener or mixing it with yogurt.
