Counseling and Psychological Services has lifted the limit for therapy sessions.
The change was primarily informed by student feedback, CAPS Director Loren Brown said.
“Many asked whether it would be possible to offer more flexibility in the number of sessions available,” Brown said. “Especially in considering the needs of students who may face various barriers in seeking out mental health services.”
Other considerations motivated the change, such as declining enrollment and the length of treatment.
“We looked at staffing levels, enrollment data, average length of treatment at CAPS and percentage of eligible students who utilize CAPS,” Brown said.
CAPS will eventually transition to a different way of operating that allows the counselors to be more flexible.
“Although we have removed session limits as of May, we are still trying to be thoughtful about how to best use our limited resource of counseling sessions,” Brown said. “We are moving to a model that gives therapists more flexibility in determining who may need additional treatment.”
Session limits at CAPS were instituted in fall of 2017. Sessions were limited to 12 per academic year and 25 total during a student’s time pursuing a degree.
