In a small town like Pullman, you’d think that there wasn’t a laundry list of opportunities to find your favorite energy drink, but you would be surprised. Within about 2 square miles of campus, there are probably 10 places you can stop by for a mid day pick-me-up sweet drink. Whether you can drive through, walk up or sit in the lounge of a cozy coffee shop, there is an on and off campus option for everyone.
Lotus, a plant based energy drink concentrate, has gained popularity over recent years. The company that started in 2007 is in competition with popular energy drinks like Redbull at coffee shops around the region. There are more than six Lotus concentrates to try, all you have to do is add soda water, and if you’re feeling fancy – you can add flavored syrups.
Thomas Hammer:
Located in the heart of Downtown Pullman, Thomas Hammer provides a coffee shop feel for all walks of life. The location is a prime spot for students, friends catching up and bikers meeting up for their weekly ride. It’s close to campus and is best to enjoy on a rainy day in Pullman. Although they only have one option of Lotus, they have a fun menu of flavor combinations to choose from, and even more espresso based drinks. Enjoy the relaxing sound of the espresso machine and savor a refreshing Lotus at Thomas Hammer.
Gypsy Java:
My personal go-to spot for a Lotus, Gypsy Java. Located next to Crimson and Gray on Bishop Boulevard, this drive-thru coffee shop has a diverse menu, from tea, smoothies, coffee and even two options for energy drinks. You are prompted to choose between a Redbull or a Lotus base for your drink, but with their seasonal named Lotus’s and more than 30 flavor options, a Lotus is the way to go. Not only do they have more flavor options than I’ve ever seen, they also have more Lotus base flavors than I’ve ever seen. On top of the expansive menu, the baristas and quick drive-thru keep me coming back.
Atrium Café:
The most accessible place on campus to grab a lotus, Atrium Café. Located on the first floor of Todd Hall, this WSU run coffee cart is a promising and reliable stop for any of your snack needs. Whether you’re rushing between classes or looking for a quick sip to get you through four more hours of classes, the Atrium Café is there for your mid-day caffeine needs. On top of coffee and energy drinks, they also have food and quick bites from WSU’s dining service. Atrium Café may not be open all day, but the convenient location and quick line make up for it.
Neill’s Coffee & Ice Cream:
Neill’s has been a beloved part of the Pullman community for over a century and there is no doubt as to why they’ve become a staple in Pullman. Known around town for its welcoming atmosphere and central location, Neill’s is the perfect spot for a scoop of ice cream. But ice cream isn’t the only thing they can serve, it might come as a surprise that they can mix up a mean Lotus energy on a hot day. The menu doesn’t stop there, additionally they offer paninis, burritos, muffins, bagels and more, anything you may need for a nice lunch downtown. Whether you’re a long time resident or a tourist stopping by the university, Neill’s continues to deliver quality and care to the community.
The Daily Grind:
With locations all over the Palouse, The Daily Grind is one of the most accessible coffee shops for students and locals alike. They offer drink options for everyone, they also have quick bites you can grab with your drink. With its yummy bites, assorted flavor menu and its convenient location, it is no wonder this local favorite has become a sweet drink staple in the region.
Whether you need to relax in the lobby of a coffee shop, or pick up your drink and enjoy it at home, Pullman has something for everyone. Support local Pullman businesses and try a popular alternative to a normal energy drink.
