When midterms hit and the library is packed, it can feel impossible to find a place to study or even just breathe. Most Cougs flock to the Terrell or Holland libraries, the CUB or their dorm lounges, but Washington State University has plenty of underrated spots that are just as good — and often much quieter.
One option many overlook is the Terrell Library Atrium. Filled with natural light and plants, the space offers a calmer atmosphere than the library’s main areas and makes for a peaceful place to focus between classes.
Another underrated choice is the fourth floor of the Compton Union Building. While the main floors are always buzzing, the top level is noticeably quieter and has plenty of tucked-away spots for solo work.
For those who like a modern environment, the Spark classrooms and open lounges are ideal when not in use. Bright lighting, comfy seating and plenty of outlets make them a perfect choice for group projects or long study sessions. Similarly, the Chinook Student Center’s fireplace lounge provides a cozy setting to read or unwind when you need a break from the grind.
The Chinook also houses something unique: napping pods. Students can reserve them when they need a recharge between classes.
“Sometimes you just need 20 minutes to reset in between classes,” said Addison Jenson, first-year elementary education major. “It’s honestly one of the best things on campus and yet, I don’t know a single person, other than me, [who uses] them.”
Outdoor spots can be just as useful when the weather cooperates. The courtyard near Murrow Hall and the green space behind Bryan Hall’s clock tower offer fresh air and a little privacy away from the foot traffic of Glenn Terrell Mall.
Whether you prefer quiet corners, modern lounges or hidden outdoor gems, WSU has more to offer than the same three study spots. Exploring campus can help you find your own place to focus or recharge — and maybe even discover your new favorite hangout.
