20-year old University of Washington student Jakori Buchanan was sentenced on Monday to just three months in jail after a guilty plea was entered for the Sep. shooting of WSU football player Sone Falealo.
Buchanan, who was arrested on Sep. 23 for the shooting following over a week of searching, pleaded guilty to third-degree assault under a plea agreement.Â
As a part of the plea bargain, Buchana was given credit for time served, meaning he’ll be released on or around Nov. 22.Â
Buchanan’s initial charges included second-degree assault and underage possession of a firearm, which were dismissed as a stipulation of the plea deal.Â
Buchanan will also serve a year probation and is legally required to stay away from Falealo. Buchanan is also now legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.Â
The shooting of Falealo occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 21 following the Apple Cup at an off-campus party in Pullman’s Aspen Heights apartment complex. Falealo was shot in the abdomen following an argument and eventual physical altercation between the two men.
Falealo received emergency surgery following the shooting. The injuries were not life-threatening, and Falealo has since been recovering, according to reporting.Â
The sentencing concludes months of the case, but has drastically increased scrutiny about party-related violence and and off-campus conduct in town.Â
